    (5) Joseph Willis (m. Susannah Beckett, Dec. 1, 1807, Montgomery County, VA). Joseph travelled from Franklin County to Montgomery County in 1807 to marry Susannah. Surety for Joseph's marriage was his brother David Willis of Montgomery County. In the marriage record, David was also listed as "Guardian" for Susannah Beckett. I do not know who Joseph's children were, but he had at least one son, born between 1800 and 1809, and several daughters (see below).

The following is family-related information on Joseph. Joseph was Surety for the marriage of his sister, Jemima, in Franklin County, VA on December 22, 1797, to David Lykins. David and Jemima named one of their sons Joseph Willis Lykins.

On December 4, 1799, Joseph signed a Franklin County VA legislative petition (Box 79, folder 18, frame 63). Joseph's signature was number 20. His father Isaiah Willis' signature was number 19. Joseph's signature on this Franklin County petition is identical to his signature on a Montgomery County Petition (December 10, 1799, Box 171, Frame 242, Folder 45). Joseph's father, Isaiah Willis, sold Joseph 220 acres "on Robert Jones' line" on January 13, 1803 for 20 pounds. (Book 5, page 466). Joseph Willis is listed in the Franklin County Land Tax records as owning 220 acres from 1804 through 1811.

Joseph is in the 1810 census for Franklin County (page 294): 10010-10200-00. This means that he himself was between 26 and 44 years old, and had living in his household one male under 10, one female under 10, and two females between the ages 16 and 25. One of the two older females was presumably his wife, Susannah.

On July 13, 1811, Joseph Willis, Susanna Willis, and Isaiah Willis sold for $1,000 to Fleming Saunders land on Pigg River beginning at Saunders, formerly Jones corner. (Book 6, page 78)

June 6, 1815. "A deed from Joseph Willis to John S. Burwell and John Carmichael - acknowledged and ordered." (Franklin County Court Orders, LDS microfilm no. 31517)
