Utter, 1436 Grelle Ave., Lewiston, Idaho 83501 (handwritten entry, probably by Loucille Goe Mullen, granddaughter of Joseph). !BURIAL: Personal observation by Robert A. Utter of Joseph's gravestone in Ivy Cemetery, Prescott, Washington !CENSUS: Not researched Joseph was the fifth of Alexander and Alida's eight children. He was married 21 March 1878 to Carrie Pettijohn at Nicollet, Minnesota. He w a teacher when they married, and his records can probably be found at t normal school (or its successor) at Mankato, Minnesota. Joseph brought his family to Walla Walla, Washington Territory near Prescott, Washington in 1882. He taught at the Pettyjohn School and took out a homestead near the school. The Jonathan Pettyjohns had settled on the Touchet River south of Prescott in 1857. Joseph's wife Carrie Pettyjohn was a first cousin of Jonathan, and this was probably where Joseph learned of the opportunities offered by Washington Territory. Joseph w a rather successful wheat rancher, eventually acquiring three ranches. He went into business and managed to lose the ranches and the business. Joseph's daughter Juliet Utter Reid stated that Joseph was too trusting.
