Joseph's marriage to Mary McAsey in 1927.

Joseph Reid was born in 1888 at Monasterevin in County Kildare. He was the son of a bricklayer and mason named John Reid and his wife Mary Cleary. The family lived at Coole, a hamlet in the townland of Coolnafearagh to the west of the town of Monasterevin. Joseph followed his father's trade, also becoming a bricklayer. He was later described as having worked at Cassidy's Distillery and at the Board of Works at the Curragh.

Joseph married Mary McAsey in Dublin in 1927, although they had grown up as neighbours at Coolnafearagh. When they married, he was about 39 and she 40. They did not have any children.

Mary died in 1952 and was buried alongside Joseph's parents at Passlands Cemetery in Monasterevin. Shortly after her death, Joseph put his house at Coole up for sale, although it is not clear whether he sold it.

Just under a year after his first wife's death, Joseph remarried, again in Dublin, to a Mary Whittle. However, less than six months after their marriage, Joseph died, aged 65. He was recorded as having died at the County Hospital in Kildare, although he was described as pulseless on admission, suggesting he had actually died on the way to the hospital. He was buried at Passlands alongside his parents, aunt and first wife. His obituary describes him as a "well known, highly esteemed figure in the district".

   Although his mother's name is given as Bridget, this is considered an error - his baptism gives his mother's name as Mary, which corresponds with all other records regarding this family.

   MONASTEREVAN
   Very deep sympathy is expressed at the death of Mr. Joseph Reid, Coolaferagh, Monasterevan, which occurred at the Kildare Co. Hospital after a brief illness. The deceased, who was a well known, highly esteemed figure in the district, was attached to the Board of Works at the Curragh for many years.
   In his younger days he was a member of the staff of Messrs. Cassidy's Distllery. On Friday the remains were removed to St. Peter and Paul Church, Monasterevan, and on Saturday interment took place in Passlands cemetery. The funeral cortege was very large and representative.
   He is mourned by his widow and his brother Mr. Michael Reid.
