Joseph Procter was baptised on 22nd April 1788 at Kirkby la Thorpe in Lincolnshire, son of Elizabeth Procter, formerly Preston, and her second husband David Procter. He was a twin, having a sister named Frances. Their baptism records that the family were paupers. Sadly Joseph died as a baby, being buried four months after his baptism.
