Joseph was a private in the NY militia Ref DASR Patriot Index This area was called German Flatts. New York is still a colony.

Joseph Myers became an innkeeper, oftern indulging in too much liquor. His gravetone said," Joseph Mayer, Esqu, an innkeeper, too much addicted to strong liquors, often suffering from stupefaction of the mind, was carried off by a malicious fever."

The graavestone is now lying flat under the grass of Myers Park in the cnter of Herkimer, NY. The four acre park originally had 400 graves. Many were transferred to new cemetery on the western edge of town called Oak Hill.

Both Joseph Myers, the innkeeper, and Henrich Harter, father of his wife Appollonia Harter were forced to fight the Indians in two major raid of the town. Capt. Henrich Harter was captured and taken to Canaca with his wife. Eventually, he escaped; rescued his wife (Catherina Pfeiffer) and their ababy (born in captivity). It is said that they crossed the St. Lawrence River in a canoe and it was so cold that the fur wrapping of the baby froze to the booom of the canoe. The baby was Catharina Harter, sister of Appollonia Harter. She married Michael Myers, brother of Joseph Jyers, the innkeeper and soldier. Michael Myers was known s Major Genral Michael Myers of the Tryon County Militia who fought the Indians i Johnstown, NY as well as in the raids on the villages of Herkimer and German Flatts. He later became a judg. His pension record states that the wound in his leg never healed and eventually caused his death. His grave had a monument which was moved to Oak Hill.

The father of these two men was know as Lt. Peter Myers. His baptismal name wa Martinus Petrus Myers (Mayer). His fathe was Johanis Mayer, schoolmaster of Michelfeld, Rigdon, Wurtemberg, Germany Peter arriver in Philadelphia, PA in 1734 on the ship "The Nancy". They lived in Amboy, New Jersey before moving to Herkimer, NYPeter had 11 childre with 7 surviving to adulthood. He was married in 1739 but no name given..
