Facts and Events
Mt. Zion Meth. Church Cem. - "Joseph M. Morrow, Co. I, 7 NC Inf, CSA". Roster of NC Confederate Soldiers; 7th Reg., Co. I. Born in Iredell Co., where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Iredell Co. at age 22, Feb. 24, 1862, for the war. Discharged at Richmond, VA, June 24, 1862, by reason of "a large tumor around right ankle". American Civil War Soldiers: Residence: Iredell County, North Carolina Occupation: Farmer Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 24 February 1862 at the age of 22 Enlisted in Company I, 7th Infantry Regiment North Carolina on 24 February 1862. Received a disability discharge Company I, 7th Infantry Regiment North Carolina on 24 June 1862 in Richmond, VA (From Tina Brown); Joseph V.B. Morrow was born Jan 22, 1842 and died in 1928. He was the longest surviving Confederate soldier to attend the "Old Soldiers Conventions" in Cornelius. They started at Mt. Zion Methodist Church and ending up being what I remember as the carnival which came to town every August. He is buried at Mt. Zion with a Confederate tombstone (which only lists year date of death). Beside him is two unmarked graves that he purchased. I am sure Mary Ann Mayhew Morrow is buried in one but I'm not sure who rests in the other. I have been told that Avery Morrow's first wife was buried there but I doubt it. Robert Morrow & his sister, Jennie Ruth, think a son that Etta listed as Samuel A.J. Morrow is buried there. I don't think Samuel A.J. ever existed, I think the Samuel A.J. Morrow Etta referred to is Avery Morrow. His name was Samuel Avery Jasper Morrow. But, Robert & Jennie Ruth say Etta gave his birth date as 1874 when Avery was born in 1873. I think Etta was getting older and forgot when Avery was born, because I can't find a Samuel A.J. Morrow born in 1874 anywhere else. I think the other grave is occupied by Houston McKnight "Mack" Morrow. He died during the same flu epidemic that killed Mary Ann Mayhew Morrow. Mary Ann Morrow was born Mar. 13, 1852 and died July 19, 1906. Joseph Morrow was one of the first public school teachers in Iredell County, N.C. I have a picture of the door and part of the front of the small school where he taught. Posted by Dianne Brown <tdhbrown- @@- email.com> on Tue, 30 Nov 1999, in response to Morrow family, posted by Tim Treadwell on Mon, 29 Nov 1999 The George Morrow we descend from is named George McKnight Morrow (I'm sure of this---I've seen deeds and other documents with the McKnight listed as his middle name). I have research done by Jay Morrow and Robert Morrow in my possession. I have never been sure Jay's research is right about John due to George's age when he died. George would have been six when John died. It would have been strange for a six year old to have been left the largest piece of land. But, it did happen. I have proved a similar thing in another line. An unborn son was left a whole farm. [edit] Census
