There are two Joseph McKinseys, born about the same time in Indiana, and easily confused, particularly since they both served in the 10th and 58th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. The one who was born in Montgomery County, son of David and Rachel Bryant McKinsey, served in Company B in both regiments, and married at least three times. His pension application record and the cemetery record both indicate that he died shortly after his marriage to Lucretia Deets, and that he had a child by one of his marriages, possibly his second marriage. His marriage records provide the links to his parents and to his wife Nancy and his wife Lucretia, while the the 1880 Census provides the link between his mother and his wife Susan.

The other Joseph McKinsey was born in Clinton County, Indiana, the son of Alfred and Sarah Reese McKinsey and served in Company A of the 10th and 58th Indiana Infantry, has no known marriage record, and lived until 1924. He is theJoseph McKinsey buried in the Danville National Cemetery in Illinois, not this Joseph McKinsey.
