Children of George Lewis: 10) Joseph, b. 1647, m. Mary Jones, removed to Swansey, and was killed by the Indians in the war, June 1675, leaving two children.
Source:Essex Institute Historical Collections (Essex Institute Press), p. 43:79, "There has been considerable discussion as to who were the parents of this Joseph Lewis. Mr. Deane's [History of] Scituate and Mr. Shepherd in the N.E. Hist. Gen. Register [see NEHGR p. 17:162] state that he was a son of George of Barnstable. There appears to be no foundation for such statement, as George had no son by that name, as is shown by Otis' Barnstable Families. There is ample evidence that Nathaniel [Lewis] was from Lynn [and moved to Swansea], and the above [Swansea town record concerning Nathaniel and Joseph's land ownership] is evidence that his brother Joseph was with him." [The facts about marrying Mary Jones and dying in 1675 pertain to whichever Joseph Lewis it was that lived in Swansea. Since no son Joseph was named in the will of George Lewis of Barnstable, it would seem most likely that he is the son of Edmund Lewis of Lynn.]
