"12. Joseph3 Emerson (John2, Michael1), born at Newbury in 1697; … He was a carpenter and wheelwright. Bought of James Hills September 13, 1719, six acres of land 'in the upper woods of Newbury.' His father gave him July 28, 1731, land which had been inherited by 'Joseph's mother' from her father, and he bought other parcels. He died at Newbury December 17, 1783 ('son of John and Judith, aged 86 years'). … In the settlement of his estate there were inventoried a homestead of 30 acres, part of this being the Cheney lands; 20 acres at Hampstead, N. H., and other tracts; notes and bonds, etc. His son John Emerson administered."
