    His birth is registered as Sept 1 1874, but possibly he was born Sep 1873. Or he was younger than his brother Henry, as suggested by the 1880 census (note that Henry's name is struck out in his family's record - he was apparently staying with his grandparents, with whom he is also listed in the 1880 census).
