I do not yet have any original documents linking the Joseph Attwood that fell overboard the steamship Manhattan to this Joseph Attwood, but it would explain why I have been unable to find a death certificate or burial information on him. It also explains his sudden disappearance from Philadephia city directories after 1872. The LDS Church has an International Genealogical Index for a Joseph Attwood who married a Sarah Allen and died in August of 1873. I do not know the original source of this information.
  5. Although Joseph, Sarah, and Elizabeth Atwood all appear to have been born in England, their ship's manifest suggests that they "severally belonged" to the United States at the time of their 1855 immigration. Perhaps the family went back and forth between America and England more than once before they finally settled here in 1855.
