Origins

Warren Ladd in Ladd Family, suggests that Joseph is the brother to Daniel of Haverhill. Ladd proposes that Joseph had an acquaintance with John Anthony and upon arriving, Joseph lived with John Anthony in Rhode Island, rather than his brother in Massachusetts.

Land Transactions

On 11 January 1658, Joseph Ladd of Portsmouth purchased land from William Baker of Portsmouth "in consideration of Full Satisfaction in hand." The land was 10 acres of land with a small dwelling house in Portsmouth that was given by the town to Robert Bellow and sold by Robert Bellow to William Backer. The parcel was bounded on the north by the highway on the south, by the Common land and brook on the west, and by the Common on the north and east. William Backer signed the deed, and the witnesses were John Sanford Sr, Richard Pearce and Samuel Sanford [5]

Probate

Joseph Ladd of Portsmouth died testate, having written a will dated 12 April 1669, which was proved 24 July 1583. The will mentions wife Joanna; Sons Joseph, William and Daniel; two youngest daughters Mary and Sarah. The overseers appointed were William Wodell and William Hall.[2]
