New England

"John Woodbury, who was one of the original settlers of Beverly, came from Somersetshire, England, under the direction of the Dorchester company, which established itself at Cape Ann about 1624. He came to Salem, was made a freeman in 1630 [actually 18 May 1631], and in 1635 was chosen a Deputy to the General Court. He was an original member of the First Church in Salem. In 1636, he received a grant of 200 acres of land on Bass river. He died in 1641."S4

He was assigned by the Dorchester company settlers (led by Roger Conant) to return to England in 1627 to represent the "condition and prospects of the colony" and returned in June of 1628. The group received a patent as the Massachusetts Bay Company on 19 Mar 1627. The settlement at Cape Ann had been moved to the nearby Indian village of Naumkeag (abandoned due to disease), which was renamed Salem in 1629. John Woodbury's mission was a success, as about 100 new settlers came in 1628 and another 300 more in 1629.S5

John Woodbury served on numerous juries in the Salem Quarterly Court, several times as foreman. Last served 29 Jun 1641; is noted as being a member of the 25 Jan 1641/2 Grand Jury, but is "absent, now dead."S1,S3

He with others filed a civil case, John Woodbury, Peter Palfrey and John Balch v. Elizabeth Babson, in the 24 Sep 1639 session.S1
