↑ The primary reason for believing this is the John who married Martha appears to be the birth of their children, which call him "John (of James)", since he would appear too young to marry in 1756 if born in 1738. 1738 doesn't come from the birth record, rather it seems to be a date asserted in a secondary source with no evidence [some entries cite family Bibles, this one does not appear to]. The father James's will names no grandchild or other detail that would confirm which John was his son.
