John Whitehead's origins have yet to be established. His first sighting is in 1708 at Heckington in Lincolnshire, when he and his wife Mary has a daughter named Mary baptised. Another daughter named Elizabeth followed in 1713. His daughter Mary's baptism describes him as a labourer.

John's daughter Mary married in 1733, and John at least five grandchildren born in his lifetime.

It seems likely that John's wife Mary died in either 1740 or 1741.

John was buried at Heckington on 20th October 1747, nearly forty years after his first known daughter's baptism.
