Quoting from Stadel, page 33:

John Wetmore was of Waterbury, Conn. in 1783 and of Barkhamsted, Conn. in 1787. He settled his family in Trenton, Oneida County, New York, before 1810. The 1800 Federal Census Record of Cambridge, Washington County, New York shows: John Whitmore (he often used that spelling) living there. The record reads: males-uner 10 years -- 2 (these would be Joseph and Orlando); males-of ten yrs and under 16 yrs - 1 (this would be John, Jr.); male-26 yrs to 45 yrs-1 (this would be John, Sr.); females-under 10 yrs- (this would be Ann) and female-26 yrs to 45 yrs (this would be Cynthia). Births of his children are not found in the Connecticut Vital Record, no unusual as vital records from the Revolutionary period to after 1820 were not well kept.

John moved his family to Ontario County, New York about 1816/17 and settled on a farm owned by his son, Orlando, at Richmond, New York. Later he moved to a farm in Bloomfield, Ontario County, New York. It wa from Bloomfield, in 1829, tht he made that fateful trip to Clayton, New York to visit his eldest son, John, Jr. There he suffered and died from an attack of the "appoplex". His burial place has not been found.
