Overview

The following is based on the FamilyPedia article apparently took the material from a variety of sources, (indicated in square brackets) but the identity of the sources is not shown. Asa results, this needs to be reworked substantially, and redocumented. Some of the statements of fact given here may reflect records for one or more of the other John Walkers in the area. Whether the John Walker who died in 1818 in Hawkins County TN is the same person is not clear.

Land records show that John Walker settled on a 400-acre parcel on the Middle Fork of the Holston River in 1775. In 1782, he received another land grant located on the Middle Fork of the Holston River for 195 acres including improvements. His property adjoined Revolutionary War General William Campbell's Aspinvale patent near the Seven Mile Ford of the Middle Fork of the Holston River, between Marion and Chilhowie in present-day Smyth County. However, John Walker’s tract was situated at least one mile west of the river. John Walker appeared on the Washington County tax roll in 1785 before moving to Hawkins County, Tennessee ca 1787. Two of his sons, Joshua and John Walker, Jr. also appeared in the early records of Washington County.

Joshua Walker served in the Cherokee Campaign and Battle of Long Island under the command of Captain James Thompson. At one point, he was also stationed at Captain James Thompson’s stone house located on Bakers Creek near the confluence of the Middle Fork of the Holston River. In 1786, Joshua Walker married Elizabeth Bunde at St. Clair’s Bottom Baptist Church. [25] Thomas Woolsey, who was the late Jerry Penley’s ancestor, performed Joshua Walker and Elizabeth Bunde’s wedding. A year later, John Walker, Jr. appeared as a non-tithable between the ages of 18-21 on the 1787 tax rolls for upper Washington County. John Walker, Jr. followed his father to TN by 1789 and was in Knox Co., KY by 1803.

DOB

At his death in 1818 (Will date), John Walker (286) had nine children. Assuming a two year interval between children he could have been married no later than about 1800, implying a DOB of no later than c1780. However, he is known to have been an adult in 1775 when he settled land in Washington County Virginia. This suggests that he could have been born no later than 1754.
