Facts and Events
John Walker was one of the Early Settlers of Augusta County, Virginia __________________________ [edit] AdvisorySome researchers have listed Alexander Walker and Janet Cowan as this John Walker's parents, but based upon yDNA analysis, this is not the case. The John Walker that is confirmed to be the son of Alexander is John "Gunstalker" Walker (b. 1708, Wigton, Scotland). Additional research is needed.
[edit] NotesFrom Rootsweb.com post: The following was taken from the book "Virginia Valley Records" by John W. Wayland. HISTORY AND REMINISCENCES OF THE CONNELLY AND WALKER FAMILIES, by Wm. W. Hooke, 1900 JOHN WALKER Sr. of AUGUSTA Co. VIRGINIA married Miss Sarah CONNELLY of Augusta Co. Va. The Walker and Connelly families immigrated to America about the middle of the 17th century [Lin: sic - later it says they landed in 1720]. They were Scotch-Irish Protestants, and in church connection Presbyterians. Alexander (Arthur) Connelly had four sons and one daughter, named Arthur, Alexander, Samuel, Williamson and Sarah Connelly. Arthur Connelly was killed by Indians to procure his rifle, which he had refused to sell to them. Alexander Connelly rode under a tree for shelter in a thunder storm. Lightning struck the tree, killing man and horse. Samuel Connelly moved to KENTUCKY, married and raised a family. Williamson Connelly went to MISSISSIPPI and engaged in surveying land for the government. He never married that his relatives knew of. Those Connellys were back to Virginia to visit relatives, the writer recollected them, about the year 1834. The writer also recollects seeing his old great-grandmother Connelly when she was nearly 90 years old, and living in her daughter's family.
Elizabeth married Captain Robert HOOKE, of ROCKINGHAM Co. Va., who had commanded a company of riflemen in the war of 1812. The said Robert Hooke and Elizabeth his wife raised a family of eight children: two boys and six girls, viz: William Walker Hooke, Sarah Campbell Hooke, Ann Elizabeth Hooke, Jane Hooke, Rebecca Hooke, John Hooke, Martha Catherine Hooke and Lucy Margaret Hooke. ALEXANDER WALKER (1794-1865) married Hannah HINTON, Dec. 2, 1830, of ROCKINGHAM Co. Va. They had seven children who lived to be grown, viz:
Dr. BENJAMIN FRANKLIN WALKER married Mary HUSTON, daughter of Col. Archibald HUSTON of ROCKINGHAM Co. Va., by whom he had one child named ARCHIE WALKER. His wife died some years later and the Dr. married a Miss WRIGHT, had two children by her, lived only a few years, and he died. SARAH JANE WALKER married Thomas CRAWFORD, had one child, and lived but a few weeks and died. JOHN WALKER went to CALIFORNIA to the gold diggings, returned broken down in health. He then went to TEXAS for a change of climate. Coming home he only got to CINCINNATI and died there. LIZZIE WALKER married David CRAIG and had two children named Alexander, (better known as Sandy) Craig and William Craig. Sandy married Sue BUTLER, no children. Will married Miss BROWNLEE, no children. He is dead, as is his father. Lizzie Craig is living. HANNAH MARY WALKER not married (dec). Gen. JAMES A. WALKER married Sally POAGE (daughter of Major Wm. and Peggy ALLEN POAGE, a descendant of Gen. James ALLEN, Rev. soldier a officer. Another descendant of theirs was the late Hon. Waller S.
