John first lived in Monroe Co., and moved to Chattanooga about1838. He was the Hamilton Co. Recorder in 1843 and 1844. He moved from Monroe Co, TN to Chattanooga where his first wife, Nancy Jane (Burton) Torbett died in 1839.

He married Maragaret Riddle in 1841 and moved to Waldron, Scott, AR before 1856. 

His son John Burton Torbett, private in CSA, was killed in Civil War in Washington Co.,AR and his son Horace Rice Torbett, private CSA, was wounded at Shiloh and died 3 weeks later in Chattanooga.


He developed the town of Vannville in 1842. He moved back to Marion County after 1846 and to Scott County, Arkansas after 1854. He was a member of the Arkansas legislature when he died and is remembered as "Judge." 

John died in Littlerock and his funeral was held in the State Capitol.
