(Submitted by Stephen Bruce Conley) JOHN TONEY born about 1781, was the son of Carey and Elizabeth (Doran) Toney. He married in Kanawha County in 1809 his cousin, Mary Ferguson. He spent most of his life in this area except for a trip to Indiana to live near his parents. He did not stay long, perhaps two or three years, returning to this area by 1830. He lived on Ramage Hill until he died about 1858. His second marriage to Mary Hager did not last long and they had no children.

John's father Carey Toney was a twin to Poindexter Toney who settled on Big Coal River. Carey served in the Revolutionary War and after a very short stay on Big Coal River moved to Preble County, Ohio where he died at age 96 years, and is buried there near the Ohio/Indiana border.

The Toney family is originally from Franklin County, Virginia. John F. Toney was accepted as a member of the Olive Branch Baptist Church on 9 October 1830.
