Note: some researchers believe that this John Thompson was a son of William Thompson, who married Jane Stuart. More research is necessary to prove.

John Thompson's land (Beverley Manor NE, 400 acres (413 acres as listed in the original patent), acquired from John Seawright on 24 November 1743) as shown on the map meticulously drawn by J.R. Acquisition of Land from Orange County, Virginia Records:

• Pg. 16-18. Indenture 24 Nov. 1743 between John Seawright of County of Augusta and John Thompson of same... for Five shillings... sells 413 acres of land in Augusta County... bounded... Revd. James Anderson... (signed) John Seawright (Seal). Witnesses: Catlett Conway, Silas Hart, John Pickins. Lease acknowledged & recorded 24 Nov. 1743. Payment of ₤40 money of Pennsylvania. Release acknowledged. [Orange County Deed Book 9, pg. 3].

Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:

• John Thompson acquired the 400-acre (actually 413 acres according to the original deed) tract in "Beverley Manor" from John Seawright, that he had patented from William Beverley in 1740 on 24 November 1743, as listed in the following Chalkley's record:

Page 156.—16th March, 1773. Robert Thompson and Agness, James Thompson and Rebecca ( ), to Zachariah Johnston, 400 acres in Beverley Manor, conveyed by Beverley to John Seawright, and by him to John Thompson, 24th November, 1743; John Thompson dying intestate, land descended to his son Thomas, his heir-at-law, who conveyed 200 acres to his brother Robert, and devised 200 acres by his will, 25th March, 1760, to said James Thompson.

Estate Records of John Thompson

There appear to be no records of John Thompson's estate in Augusta County records, although the following Chalkley's record does list a "Margaret Thompson, widow" that appears to be the wife of John Thompson. Also, as listed in the above-listed will of Robert Thompson, John Thompson did die intestate (without will) prior to the will written by Thomas Thompson in March, 1760.

• Page 279.--15th November, 1758. Settlement of John Craig's estate, by Jennet Craig, his widow and sole executrix. Due Margaret Thompson, widow. Due Saml. Davison, Rev. Jno. Craig, Saml. Erasure, Ro. Moody, Isbell Erasure (widow), John Baskins. (Note: this record establishes that John Thompson had died prior to this date).

• Page 260.--5th June, 1749. John Smith, Gent., to Silas Hart, mason, 400 acres on South Fork of North River of Shannadore. James Wood's line. Patented to John, 25th June, 1747. Margaret, John's wife, releases dower. Teste: John Thompson, John Poage, John Archer.

• Page 464.--22nd February, 1749. Same (From William Beverley) to John Frazier, 472 acres in head of Long Meadow Run, Beverley Manor. Corner John Thompson. Corner Robert Moody. (Note: this is an important record that proves the location of John Thompson's land in Beverley Manor. The patent of John Frazier was formerly the northwestern portion of the land originally patented to Rev. James Anderson, shown on the Hildebrand Map above. This proves that John Thompson's land was the land acquired from John Seawright in 1743, which bordered John Frazier's patent from Beverley in 1749.

• Page 473.--23rd February, 1749. Same (From William Beverley) to William Johnston. Delivered: Zachariah Johnston, 1st June, 1773. 156 acres and 269 acres in Beverley Manor. Corner to William Wright. Corner John Thompson, Alexander Henderson's line. The Barrens. Platt. Teste: Alexander Wright, Samuel McCune. (Note: this record also shows that John Thompson's land was the land acquired from John Seawright, as it borders this patent to William Johnston, on Thompson's northeastern border).

• Page 611.--1st March, 1749. William Beverley to William Wright, 155 acres, 270 acres--425 acres--in Beverley Manor. Alexander Henderson's line. Corner William Johnston, John Thompson's line. Teste: James Henderson, Andrew McClure. (Note: this patent borders John Thompson's land on the northeastern border, above William Johnson's land, as shown in the Hildebrand map above).

• Page 351.--27th February, 1750. William Wright (Right) and Margaret, to William Johnston, 270 acres in Beverley Manor; corner Wm. Logan; corner John Thomson. Teste: Thomas Tosh, Robert Gray.

• Page 50.--15th November. 1758. Thomas Thompson, farmer, and Mary ( ) to Robt. Thompson, £30, 200 acres, part of tract on which John Thompson, deceased, formerly lived on Long Meadow: corner Wm. Wright's land. Teste: Jno. Poage. Geo. Crawford, Alexander McDonnall.

• Page 51.--15th November. 1758. John (signed Thomas) Thompson to Robert Thompson. Good consideration, lease 3-3/4 acres of meadow on Long Meadow on the upper end of the meadow formerly belonging to my father, now deceased, 999 years. Teste: Samuel Caldwell.

• Page 156.--16th March, 1773. Robert Thompson and Agness, James Thompson and Rebecca ( ), to Zachariah Johnston, 400 acres in Beverley Manor, conveyed by Beverley to John Seawright, and by him to John Thompson, 24th November, 1743; John Thompson dying intestate, land descended to his son Thomas, his heir-at-law, who conveyed 200 acres to his brother Robert, and devised 200 acres by his will, 25th March, 1760, to said James Thompson.

• Page 158.--17th March, 1773. Margaret ( ) Thompson, widow, late wife of John Thompson, deceased, releases dower in above. Teste: John Davidson.

• Page 352.--18th August, 1784. Isaiah Vansant and Margaret, of Botetourt, to Zechariah Johnston. Thos. Thompson, son and heir of John Thompson, deceased, conveyed 200 acres to his brother, Robert, and 213 to his brother, James, but not to his heirs, who sold to Z. Johnston, but the title being faulty, title became invested by descent in said Margaret, daughter and only heir of Thomas Thompson. (Note: this record verifies that the original tract acquired by John Thompson from John Seawright was for 413 acres (200 + 213), and not 400 acres, as listed in some of the records listed above).
