Details from the Bible inscription that was in M.E Holloway's possession: Margaret the eldest daughter of John and Anne Thomas of Cwmsidan was born on Friday the 15th day of August 1828 at 1/4 of an hour past 2 o'clock in the morning. Christened by the Revd David Jones of Llanwrda on the 29th of the same month. ______________________________________________________________ John the son of John and Anne Thomas was born on the 27th day of May 1832 being Sunday at 1/4 to four in the evening. Dr. Williams , Llandovery, was here and operated towards the birth of the child. Christened on the 5th day of June 1832 by the Revd D. Jones of Llanwrda. ______________________________________________________________ 1834 April 30th Venerable Father John Thomas of Maesygroes departed this life in Peace and Joy in Jesus Christ at 1 o'clock in the morning after a severe but short illness, and in the 71st year of his age leaving my mother Catherine Thomas, my sister Mary and myself, and seven grandchildren, 5 with Mary and 2 with myself to lament his loss though not without hope. ______________________________________________________________ 1835 February the 15th the above named Margaret Thomas, our dear and beloved child departed this life in the love of our Blessed Redeemer Jesus Christ, in the 7th of her age. ______________________________________________________________ Edward the 2nd son of John and Anne Thomas was born on Wednesday the 1st day of April 1835 at 1/2 past 6 in the evening. Christened on Tuesday the 7th day of the same month by the Revd John Jones, Vicar of Llansadwrn. ______________________________________________________________ Second Margaret the daughter of John and Anne Thomas was born on February 17th 1837 at 1/4 to 11 o'clock at night. Christened on the 24th of the same month by the Revd John Jones, Vicar of Llansadwrn. ______________________________________________________________ Anne Thomas my dear and beloved Wife departed this life at Neath in the County of Glamorgan on Tuesday the 12th day of February 1840, and was buried at Talley Saturday the 16th leaving myself and 3 little children to lament her loss though not without hope as we have reason to believe that she fell asleep in Jesus Christ. ______________________________________________________________ John Thomas of Cwmsidan was solemnized in marriage the 2nd time to Jane Morgan of Cilyllynfawr in the parish of Llansawel on Friday the 1st day of December 1843 in the 27th of her age. ______________________________________________________________ Mary the daughter of John and Jane Thomas was born on November the 20th 1844, being Wednesday at 10 minutes past 5 o'clock in the evening. Christened on Wednesday the 4th day of December following by the Revd John Jones Vicar of Llansadwrn. ______________________________________________________________ Translation of farm/house names: Cwm Sidan - two words. Cwm is Valley and Sidan is silk.Therefore Silk Valley. Maes-y-Groes. Maes is another word for field and groes is a mutation of croes, cross. Hence Field on the cross (Roads?). Cil y llyn fawr. Cil is retreat. Llyn is a lake and fawr is big or great. Should be the retreat on the great lake.
