John Taylor, commonly known as John Taylor of Caroline (Caroline County, Virginia) was born in 1753, either in Orange or Caroline County, and died at his plantation home, "Hazelwood", in 1824. When he was three years old, his father died, and he passed into the care of his kinsman, Edmund Pendleton, Private tutors, a private school, William and Mary College, and the law office of Edmund Pendleton constituted his education. His career as lawyer was barely started when the American Revolution began, and he immediately entered the army, serving, mainly in Virginia, New York, and Pennsylvania, and reaching the rank of major. Later he entered the Virginia militia as lieutenant colonel and fought with Lafayette against the Hessians.

Edmund Taylor's sister, Catherine, married Moses Penn. Their only child, John Penn, born in 1741 was an attorney in Caroline and later moved to Granville County, North Carolina. He served in the Continental Congress for six years and signed the Declaration of Independence from North Carolina. Edmund's brother James married Anne Pollard and they were the parents of Lt. Col. John Taylor "of Caroline", a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, a U.S. Senator, writer and ally of Thomas Jefferson. Lt. Col. John Taylor married John Penn's daughter Lucy. Both Penn and Lt. Col. John Taylor had studied law under Edmund Pendleton.
