It has been reported that William Stuart, son of James (1) Stuart was born about 1754 in Augusta County, Virginia. Probably it was earlier and possibly occured in Ireland. He married Nancy Christopher of Knox County, Kentucky and they had at least three children, one of whom was John Stewart whose lineage was documented in what appears to be an old and credible study. John the son of William married Mary Arthur, who was a daughter of Thomas and Sarah Arthur from Bedford County, Virginia. John and Sarah left Knox County, Kentucky and settled in Knox County, Tennessee, where they both died. They raised one of their grandsons in addition to their own son, whose name was: you guessed it, JOHN.

This second John Stewart served with the Kentucky Militia under the command of Capt. G. W. Craig in the War of 1812. He enlisted in Knox County, Kentucky, 1 August 1812 and served in Canada as a part of the infantry. He was married to Mary Miller 1 January 1812 in Tennessee by William Jones. Mary Stewart of Guthrie, Indiana, aged 83 years, widow of John Stewart, applied for a widow's pension 17 January 1876. John Stewart died 15 October 1858 in Elizabeth County Illinois.
    They had ten children.

Some Misc. Notes: (1) Sarah Deckard stated 17 January 1876 that she was a daughter of John Stuart and Mary Miller and that they were married 1 January, 1812 in Tennessee.
    (2) Entries in John Stuart’s handwriting were in evidence in the Adam Deckard family record in 1907. (Adam Deckard was a grandson.)
    (3) On 8 February 8, 1876, John and Mary’s son Milton Stuart testified, and on 1 April 1876, Mary Stewart and her daughter Mary Deckard, testified that John Stuart was 69 years old when he died 15 October 1858.
    (4) John and Mary’s youngest son, Columbus, was a private in Company H, 120th Regiment of the Indiana Infantry in the Civil War. Another son, Milton, lived to be over 90 years of age and was killed when he fell from his horse and broke his back.

The attached outline of descendants of William Stuart through his grandson John does not include all the Deckards and others, but gives those with surname Stuart only.
