John Stickney's Will

"'Will of John Stickney of Newbury, being weak in body, but of disposing mind, &c.

Imp's. I give and bequeath unto Mary Stickney my dearly and well beloved wife the use of the whole of my Real Estate both housing, lands and meadow, until my son Amos Stickney come to ye age of twenty-one years, and then my will is yt. My son Amos shll have one-half of ye Real Estate, my wife to have all personal estate.

Item. I give to my son John Stickney £5, to be paid by son Amos, besides what I have already given him by deed of gift.

Item. I give to my son Joseph Stickney one acre of land on northerly side of pine swamp, bounded by land of John Titcomb, &c. A lot of land in 4th general pasture so called which was laid out to ye Rate Right of Stephen Acreman, Salt-Marsh at Plumb Island and £40.

Item. I give to my son Moses Stickney, land, &c.

Item. To son Amos all ye rest of my Real Estate, housing, lands, &c., he to pay to my son John £5, Joseph £30, Moses £40, daughter Mary Kingsbury £3, daughter Sarah Braggden £3, daughter Prudence Noyes £10, and to deliver to my wife Mary Stickney, 4 cords of wood per year during her widowhood. If Amos dies, son Moses to take his place, Amos to pay to his daughter Ednar Stickney £30 whe 18 years old.

An inv. of his estate was taken Sept. 18, 1727. Amt. Real, £1388. Personal, £223, 6s., which considering he had portioned his eldest son and three daughters, was a large estate."[1]

    "19. John Stickney, b. in Newbury, June 23, 1666, m. there Dec. 10, 1689, Mary, dau. of Sam'l and Rebecca Poor, who was b. in Newbury Oct. 21, 1671. … He was a soldier under Capt. Thomas Noyes of Newbury, 1708 [Mass. Archives], called out in consequence of the attack on Haverhill by the Indians on the 29th of August. … John Stickney died in Newbury. His grave stone with that of his wife Mary, are still standing (1869) in the burial ground at Newbury Old Town, near the entrance, a short distance from the meeting-house. They were probably brought from England, and must have been quite costly at the time they were erected. They have suffered very little injury and decay from time. They bear the following inscriptions: 'Mr. John Stickney died 13 August, 1727, in his 62d year.' 'Mary wife, of John Stickney died 20 august, 1737, in her 65th year.'"
