Facts and Events
John received his early education in a subscription school near Reedsville. He operated a stationary engine in the mines and in sawmills in the Newburg and Scotch Hill localities in Preston County. He was associated with his father in the milling business, and later was employed in the Smoot Mill, owned by J. R. Smoot. It was the first mill to be equipped with the "roller process" in the region. He then moved to Parsons, where he joined a business with his brother, W. F. Squires. He left this enterprise after 3 years, and became a partner with George Mayer in the Parsons Milling and Mercantile Company. He cast his first vote for President in 1872 for General Grant, and has voted Republican for over 50 years. He acquired a portion of his deceased father's land from his brother, Lucian, on 11/26/1902. (Preston County Deeds). References
