John Sprowl – Settler of Bordon’s Tract 1753, then Jackson River 1770 1721?-1796

John Sprowl was born in County Tyrone, Ireland in 1721. He married Margaret Paul who was born in Scot-land 17391. (Name spelled Sproul often in earlier records but later Sprowl.)

First Augusta County Records of John Sprowl in 1753 – - Communicant at Timber Ridge signing call of Rev John Brown{about 6 mi. NE of Lexington}

- Purchased 194 acres in Beverly Manor {on SE Bordon Tract line}
- Purchased 285 acres on drafts of James {nearby just to the South in Bordon Tract}
- Road worker from North Fork of James {now Maury River} to Renix Road 

- Road worker from Edmonston’s Mill to Fork Meeting House

Location

– In 1753 John purchased land both in the lower area of Beverly Manor on the Bordon Tract line near Halfway Creek on a parcel first patented to William Robinson (194 ac) and a nearby 285 acre parcel in the Bordon Tract. He sold the Beverly land in 3 years but kept the Bordon land for at least 17 years, so most certainly lived there. He also bought another 250 acre parcel in 1768 in Bordon Tract but held that for only a year. These parcels may be located on the respective tract maps: Beverly Manor 17362and Bordon Tract 17393

John and Margaret moved on to Jackson River in 1770 to 85 acres on the Jackson River {now in BathCo}, known by name of “English Place.” This was purchased by John Sproul and wife Margaret for £20.

Land and Location of Jackson River John Sprowl

John and Margaret Sprowl bought two parcels of land in 1753, located about six miles apart. One parcel of 194 acres was in Beverly Manor on the southern border adjacent to the Bordon Tract. This was part of the 1749 William Robinson 380 acre parcel shown on the Beverly Manor Map. This land was sold three yearslater.

1756 Augusta Deed Book No 7, p.275 John ( ) Sproul, weaver, to William Purris, weaver, £45, 194 acres in Beverley Manor conveyed to John by Samuel Houston, a stony timber hill in John Montgomerey's and Beverley Manor's and Borden's patents line. Pat. Hays' cor.

The second parcel was of 285 acres located in the reaches of Cedar Creek, between today’s Fairfield and Mountain View, near I81 and about three miles SE of Brownsburg. 200 acres of this land is shown on the Bordon Tract map as the grant to James Patton in 1750. It is presumed that John and Margaret lived here until moving to the Jackson River.

John and Margaret purchased an additional 250 acre parcel in 1768, reselling it in 1769. This was alsonearby, on the reaches of Goose Creek and about 2 miles East of Brownsburg

After 27 years in the Bordon Tract, John and Margaret purchased land and moved to the Jackson River in today’s Bath County.
