Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

Acquisition of Land from Kegley's Virginia Frontier:

• Land Grants, Bk. 34, 127 - John Smith, 400 acres on a branch of Roanoke River called Goose Creek including the Great Lick. [Kegley's Virginia Frontier, pg. 107, 109].

Disposition of Land from Chalkley's:

• Page 238.--21st November, 1759. John Smith, Gent., to Malcom Campbell, £__, 400 acres on Goose Creek of Roanoke, including the Great Lick, on side Smith's Creek, near mouth of Lick Branch. Sent to Wm. Campbell, the heir-at-law, by his order October, 1773.

Records in Virginia

• July 12, 1751 - John Hays, 265 acres on Roanoke, corner John Smith. [Kegley's Virginia Frontier, pg. 99].

• January 6, 1762 - Robert Breckenridge, 265 acres on the Roanoke, corner to a survey made by John Smith. The land devised to John Hays of Albemarle, by his father and acquired by John Suthorn and Robert Donald, of Hanover, merchants, as a result of foreclosure. Au. D. Bk. 10, 405 [Kegley's Virginia Frontier, pg. 300].

Information on John Smith

The First Smith to ever buy land on Goose Creek of Roanoke was a man called John Smith. He bought a tract of land containing 400 Acres lying and being in the County of Floyd (then Augusta) on a Branch of the Roanoke called Goose Creek, on August 16th 1756. The Roanoke itself was called Goose Creek but this Specifically says a Branch of the Roanoke called Goose Creek. Note that it is in Augusta County. There is more than one Goose Creek. But only one resides in Augusta County in 1756 as a Branch of the Roanoke. Today it is Floyd County Virginia.
