According to the Shankland Family Research by Albert Shankland, John married Mary 'Polly' Stoops in 1818 and had one child, Elizabeth P., about 1820. In 1822 his widow Polly married his cousin, John Wolfe Shankland (son of David) and in 1837 his daughter Elizabeth married her cousin, Jesse H. Shankland (son of Benjamin F. Shankland). 

 His widow and daughter may be living with his parents in the 1820 census for Nicholas Co., Kentucky.
