In 1900 census, living with his parents.
In 1910 city directory, living with sister and brother-in-law Minnie and Emil Brucker, but they're not living together in the 1910 census. (Figure that city directory info is compiled the year before?)
Can't find them in 1910 census.
John Patrick, along with all of his siblings, decided in 1913/1914 to change their last name from SCHMIDT to SMITH. It took about ten years for each of them to finally make the legal change.
Graduated from the U. of Buffalo Pharmacy School, spent 1 yr. in NYC; worked many yrs. as a hired pharmacist (Hengerer's Dept. Store); he left there and for a short time operated Hegard Drug Store on Genesee St. (cheated out of wages); eventually opened his own store (Smith's Safe Pharmacy) in the Kensington area of Buffalo in 1926.
Per his daughter, Mildred Smith Heffley, "he wasn't religious, but the day before he died, he was hollering the Lord's Prayer."
1930 census:
Smith, John P., $9,000, R; age 48, married (24 at first marriage; self and parents born NY; pharmacist, drugstore
-, Caroline P., 47, age 22 at marriage, self born NY; parents born Germany
-, Howard H., son, 22, single, pharmacist
-, Mildred P., daughter, 17, clerk, drugstore
-, John L., son, 6
In later years, resided on Highgate Street (or Avenue), Buffalo, Erie, New York.
