Agricultural labourer. 1860, May 27 - Discharged from the Metropolitan Police. 1860, June 19 - Occupation on marriage certificate recorded as "late Policeman", residing in South Lopham. 1860, July 18 - Appointed to the Norfolk Constabulary at Norfolk, Warrant No 998. Stationed at Walsingham. 1861 - Living in Broken Dock, Little Walsingham with wife Mary Ann, one son and his widowed mother. Police officer, aged 27, born at South Lopham, Norfolk. 1862, May 5 - Raised to 2nd class in Norfolk Constabulary. 1862 - Police officer in East Rudham. (baptism) 1865-9 - Policeman in Beachamwell. (baptisms) 1869, September 27 - Raised to 1st class in Norfolk Constabulary. 1871 - With wife and 4 children at Beechamwell St John & St Mary, Norfolk. Police constable, aged 40, born at South Lopham, Norfolk. 1879, May 12 - Records indicate that John was struck off the Norfolk Constabulary because of ill-health. 1880, January 8 - Received a gratuity of 50 pounds "by order of the court", which is noted on his police service record. 1881 - John was a grocer and a farmer with 11 acres at King William Lane, Pentney, Norfolk. Aged 50, he is living with his second wife and two daughters are still at home. 1891 - With wife in shop and house at Pentney, Norfolk, next to the King William IV. Farmer, self-employed, aged 60. 1892 - In Kelly's Directory there is a John SARE, Grocer, in Pentney. 1896 - In Kelly's Directory there is a John SARE, farmer, at South Lopham. 1897 - Farmer. (Ellen's marriage) 1901 - With wife and son next door to Chequers Inn (recorded as "near Chequers"), Redgrave Road, South Lopham. Farmer - employer, aged 70. 1910 - Died, aged 80. Buried alone in a long row of SARE graves. The Examination of a Candidate for the situation of Police Constable in the Norfolk Constabulary, completed 18 July 1860, has the following information: Name: John Sare. Age: 27 Years. Height: 6 Feet. Complexion: Fair. Eyes: Blue. Hair: Brown. Particular Marks: None. Figure: Proportionate. Where born: In the Parish of South Lopham, in or near the town of Diss, in the County of Norfolk. Trade or Calling: Blacksmith. Read and write: Yes. Single or married: Married. Number of children: No. Residence: South Lopham. What Public Service: Metropolitan Police. Length of Service: 1 Year and 3 Months. Amount of Pension: "Conduct Good". When discharged: 27th May 1860. With whom last employed: Commissioners of Metropolitan Police. And where: London. Do you belong to any Orange Lodge or secret service: No. His memorial inscription, as supplied by Rosie Flower from a transcription made by the Women's Institute, reads: In/ loving memory of/ JOHN SARE/ who passed away Sept. 19th 1910/ aged 80 years/ "Come unto me all ye that labour/ and are heavy laden, and I will/ give you rest."/ Matt.
