    "5 John Russell, eldest son of the Rev. Samuel and Abigail (Whiting) Russell was born January 24, 1687, graduated at Yale in its first class, that of 1704, and lived in Branford, Connecticut, where he was one of its most influential citizens. He was town clerk for more than twenty years, justice of the peace for nearly thirty years, and deputy to the General Assembly for forty-five sessions, serving as speaker of the lower house in 1751. He rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Militia, and was for the last twenty-four years of his life a deacon of the First Church in Branford."
