John Joseph Reid was born in 1885 in County Kildare, probably in the town of Monasterevin. He was the eldest child of a bricklayer named William Reid and his wife Elizabeth Bowe, who had married the previous April.

John Joseph has not been found in the 1901 census, but in 1911 was living at Mary's Lane in Monasterevin with his parents and siblings and working as a clerk. He died two years later, aged 28.
