(III) Stephen, son of John and Nancy (Woodrow) Patton, was born about two and a half miles from Fayette city, in Washington township, Fayette county, Pennsylvania, in 1805, died there in his eighty-seventh year. He was crippled in one limb from boyhood, which exempted him from military duty. He learned the cabinet maker's trade, at which he worked until 1844. He then purchased a farm and devoted the remainder of his life to agriculture. He was a lifelong Democrat, and worshipped according to the Presbyterian faith. He married, in 1838, Susan P. Galloway , born in Washington township, Fayette county, Pennsylvania, in 1816, died, 1889, daughter of Robert, born in Ireland, and Ann T. (Moss) Galloway, born in New Salem, Fayette county. Children: 1. Anna E., born 1839. 2. Sarah E., 1841. 3. John S., of whom further. 4. Robert G., born 1846; was a D.D.S., practicing continuously from 1867 until 1902, when he retired with a competence. 5. Nancy, born 1848. 6. Martha, 1851. 7. Noah W., in early life a mechanical genius, practicing carpentry, cabinet making, stone cutting, plastering, and was a good draughtsman; he was a graduate of California State Normal School (Pennsylvania), taught for several terms, and entered Jefferson Medical College, whence he was graduated M.D. in 1882. Since that date he has been in continuous practice of the medical profession, now located in Charleroi, Pennsylvania . 8. Mary A., born 1856. 9. Rev. Joseph G., born 1860; graduate of Waynesburg College (Pennsylvania), Union Theological Seminary, New York City, 1884, took holy orders, preached first as a supply, then was installed pastor over the Presbyterian church at Brownsville, serving that congregation ten years. He was then placed in charge of the mission at Washington, Pennsylvania, where he continued thirteen years, building up from the mission, a strong prosperous and influential Presbyterian church. In 1911 he accepted an urgent call from the church at Weatherford, Texas, where he is now pastor of a loyal, prosperous congregation.

(IV) John S., son of Stephen and Susan (Galloway) Patton, was born at the farm (Rich Hill ), where he now resides, in 1844. He received a good education in the public schools, continuing his school work until seventeen years of age. To this he has added largely by a course of self-study and wide reading on subjects in which he is interested. At the age of twelve years he began assisting at farm labor, and from that period has always been an agriculturist. He is a lover of his business, and although possessed of a competency still spends a portion of each day in the fields, drawing from the soil good health, and, from such close association with nature, a bountiful store of useful knowledge, for richly does mother nature give up her secrets to those who seek her close acquaintance. Mr. Patton has prospered, and can look back on his nearly seventy years with much satisfaction. He is a man of literary taste, and many articles from his pen have appeared in the agricultural journals. He has business interests outside of farming, being connected as a stockholder with the First National Bank of Belle Vernon and the National Bank of Fayette City . He is a Prohibitionist in party faith, held the office of township auditor for twelve years and has been actively connected with road making in the township. In religious faith he is a Presbyterian, and from boyhood until nineteen years of age regularly attended preaching and Sunday school at the Rehoboth church. At that age he joined Harmony Cumberland Presbyterian Church, now merged into the Presbyterian U. S. A. Shortly after becoming a member he was chosen teacher, and for forty-nine years until the present he has faithfully taught in the Sunday school, the records showing very few Sabbaths when he was absent from his post. Mr. Patton has kept a diary for the past forty-nine years, daily noting the events occurring in his life, the temperature, precipitation, deaths occurring in the neighborhood, or in the nation, particularly those of unusual interest, like the assassination of our presidents.
