Irene Amato writes: "John Nutt was unmarried when he served with his father and brothers in the militia in 1755 under Capt. Andrew Pickens. John's father had deeded him 300 acres on both sides of Waxhaw Creek, which included the Nutt home place.
...In 1777, he was appointed in Mecklenburg as tax assessor, with Joseph Douglas his collector. ...During 1780-81, he was referred to as Capt. John Nutt, but the title was probably political rather than military as no proof of his participation in the Rev. War has been found, but this might not have been the case.
On Jan. 25, 1786, John and Catherine sold their land...It was described as "Land I which William Nutt did formerly aline, remise, release, convey and confirm to said John Nutt on Waxhaw Creek..."
This was the land which his father had given him. It's probable that John & Catherine went to GA soon after disposing of their land on Waxhaw Creek for a John Nutt received 200 acres of land in Washington County in 1787. He is mentioned as an original settler of Washington County in May 1787 when he served in the first Grand Jury at the first session of the Superior Court held in Sandersville, GA. Also present then was Andrew Nutt. No children have been identified as belonging to John..."
