John Meakins was born on 9th September 1872 at Southwark in the southern suburbs of London, son of a hawker called Ann Meakins, formerly Walter, and her husband John Meakins, a costermonger. In February 1880, when young John was only seven years old, his father died.

The 1881 census finds John living with his mother and siblings at 14 Fox’s Buildings in Southwark. Later that year John’s mother married a John Thompson, who thus became John’s stepfather. John’s mother died in December 1890.

John’s next sighting is in March 1893, aged twenty, when he enlisted into the army. He called himself John Thompson when he joined up, using his stepfather’s surname. In November 1894 he was posted abroad, to serve in India. In 1900, whilst based at Lucknow in northern India, John wrote to the army authorities to notify them that he was reverting to his birth name of Meakins rather than Thompson.

In September 1902, after nearly eight years in India, John was transferred to South Africa, where the Second Boer War had recently ended. He stayed in South Africa for about eighteen months, before transferring back to Britain.

On 11th July 1904, aged 31, John married a widow called Eliza Bibby (formerly Large) at St Mark’s Church in the Walworth area of Southwark in London. She had three surviving children from her first marriage.

John and Eliza went on to have another five children between 1905 and 1915, although their first child died young.

John retired from the army in 1909 and worked as a dock labourer. The 1911 census finds John, Eliza and their children (including her three children from her first marriage) living at 10 Eltham Street in the Walworth area of Southwark.

In August 1914, a few days after Britain joined the First World War, John rejoined the army. He would later be posted to France on at least two separate occasions. He was only demobilised from the army in February 1919 after the war was over.

Eliza died in 1926, aged 55.

In 1929, John married again. His second wife was a widow called Harriet Annie Jeffery, formerly Benbow.

At the outbreak of the Second World War, John and Harriet were living at 7 Eltham Street in Southwark. John described himself as “late engine driver now watchman”.

John died on 1st June 1949 at Lambeth Hospital, aged 76. Harriet survived him by thirteen years.
