Facts and Events
John is believed to be the son of Person:Thomas McSpadden (1), an early settler of Borden's Grant (Rockbridge County). John was born here sometime between about 1750 and 1754. JOhn had at least six brothers, five of whom moved to Southwest Virginia about 1775. John McSpadden apparently remained on Borden's grant for several years, probably farming the property his father acquired in 1744.
His wife, Esther Thompson was born in County Atrim, Ireland See Digital Library in 1761. Esther came to America in 1775 with her mother Elizabeth Lyle Thompson Donald, two sisters, and her stepfather, Mathew Donald Her mother and stepfather apparently settled on Borden's Grant, at least initially, where her grandparents, Mathew Lyle and Margaret Snoddy, had settled some 30 years earlier. As it happens Mathew Lyle's land was adjacent to that of Thomas McSpadden. Here Esther met and married John McSpadden in December of 1779.
Just after the Revolution John McSpadden left Borden's grant, moving south to Jefferson County, TN. At least one of his brothers, Person:Samuel McSpadden (1), also settled here, coming to the area from SW Virginia. He probably settled near the community of Dandridge, though some genealogists list the birth place of at least one child as in adjacent Monroe County. John died about 1798. Wife Esther lived on dying between June of 1832 (will written) and March of 1835 (probate date).
