The first settlers of Zanesville (Ohio) arrived at the mouth of the Licking River at its confluence with the Muskingum River in 1794. Five years later the town was laid out by John Mclntire, who was known as its founder, patron and benefactor. It is the county seat of Muskingum County and has a population of about 25,000 and is the largest city in southeastern Ohio, east of Columbus.


From "The History of Brown County, Ohio", by Josiah Morrow, pg. 291:
In May, 1796, Congress passed an act authorizing Ebenezer Zane to open a road from Wheeling, Va., to Limestone, Ky., and, in the following year, Mr. Zane, accompanied by his brother, Jonathan Zane, and his son-in-law, John McIntyre, all experienced woodsmen, proceeded to mark out the new road, which was afterward cut out by the two latter. The cutting, however, was a very hasty work, nothing more being attempted than to make the road passable for horsemen. As acompensation for opening this road, Congress granted to Ebenezer Zane the privilege of locating military warrants upon ‘three sections of land, not to exceed one mile square each...
