John McDannald Jr. enlisted in the Revolutionary War in March, 1781, as a substitute for William Smith in a three month draft in Capt. John Waughs Co., Col. Jas. Slaughter, and skimished with the British in Richmond, Petersburg and Manchester areas of Virginia. He was discharged at Raccoon Ford. One month later he again enlisted, this time as a substitute for his father in a three month draft under Capt. Adwauder Slaughter, Col. John Slaughter and fought at Malvern Hill, Williamsburg and Little Fork Dist. two weeks before surrender. In 1805 he went to Franklin County, Kentucky. His kin at death included The said John McDonald served in the Revolutionary War with George Washington at Valley Forge during the winter of 1776, was at Braddocks defeat and also served in the Colonial War. The Adjutant Generals office gave the following:
The records show that John McDonald, Jr., served in the Revolutionary War as a private of Captain William Croghan's Company, 8th Virginia Regiment commanded by Colonel Abraham Bowman. He enlisted 25 March 1776; was promoted to Sereant on 1 May 1777, and was taken prisoner 4 October 1777. He escaped from the enemy 14 February 1778. The date of his separation from services is not shown. His last name appears on a company muster roll of part of the 8th Virginia Regiment, whose time expires before the 10th day of April next, for the month of January 1778, dated February 4, 1778.
