Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:
- Page 523.--19th August, 1761. Charles Millican, of Orange County, North Carolina, by John Buchanan, to John McClellon, £__, 297 acres on a branch of James River, on Looney's Mill Creek. Delivered: Francis Smith, 1st October, 1767.
Disposition of Land from Chalkley's:
- Page 369.--12th October, 1765. John ( ) McCleland to Edward Sharp, £30, 60 acres by patent 3d November, 1750, and conveyed by Patton to Charles Milligan, 17th November, 1752, and conveyed by Milligan to McClelan, on head of Looney's Creek. (Note: Edward Sharp was a son-in-law of John McClelland).
- Page 372.--12th October, 1765. Same to Same (John ( ) McCleland to Edward Sharp), £45, 84 acres by patent, 23d May, 1763, at the Big Meadows, part of Zachary Lewis' order of Council.
Processioning List of 1765
- "Processioning" was the periodic review and agreement of property lines between settler's lands. Processioning Lists are useful in determining the general area of a settlers lands and their neighbors at specific time periods:

- Page 77 - William McClellon, 80 acres, Looney Creek. Adjoining John McClellon. September 19, 1767. [Abstract of Land Grant Surveys, 1761-1791, Augusta & Rockingham Counties, Virginia, by Peter Cline Kaylor, pg. 29].
- Page 375.--25th June, 1769. John Buchanan's will--Lands on Reed Creek called Anchor and Hope, and 500 acres on New River where Adam Harman lived; to sons, James, William, and John (all under 30); to wife and children, tract where Walter Stewart lives; to daughter, Mary Boyd, wife to Andrew Boyd; to three youngest daughters; to George Wilson; to relative, James Buchanan, merchant in this county. Executors, Col. Andrew Lewis, Col. Wm. Preston, and nephew Wm. Campbell. Teste: John Smith, Robt. Breckinridge, Wm. Thompson, Jno. McClellan. Proved, 16th August, 1769. Preston and Campbell qualify; and 23d February, 1818, the will not having been recorded a certified copy is now ordered to be spread on record.
Information on John McClelland
John McClelland probably died between 1776, when he entered 1,400 acres of land in Scott County, Virginia, and 1780, when his son, Abraham acted as the executor of those lands. This case is listed in court records.

Dear Pat,
As a matter of fact, I do have a McClelland family history, and I believe that Liz Looney sent it to me in 1979, when I was writing a short history of the Rhea family for the males in my family. The
footnote at the bottom of the page says "(This is a copy of material sent to Elizabeth Looney by Mrs. E.S. Atkins,Sr., 2022 McClendon, Houston, Texas, November 1966.)" It is fairly extensive. I will copy in installments if you so desire. For now, you may want to post to the list. I send to you as our page "master", and arbiter of data. I will skip around on this initial copy to you for pertinent data.
John McClellan, Sr., emigrated from northern Ireland to Virginia by 1766, or earlier, where his
descendants intermarried with Wallaces, Looneys, Gambles, Gammons, Mingo, Andersons, Prestons, Seviers, Walkers, Campbells, Lapasleys, Ramseys, Breckenridges and other families in that region.
John McClellan had at least five children and perhaps more viz: John,Sr., William, Abraham, Jane
and Mary.
- 1. John. nothing further known of him.
- 2.William; married Barbara Walker.nine children; Anna, John, William, Samuel, Abraham, James, David, Elizabeth and Jane. note; Abraham, above, son of William, born Nov. 1, 1776; married first, Julia Annis LOONEY, his COUSIN. note; Elizabeth, above, daughter of William, born Oct.26, 1790, married JAMES LOONEY.
- 4. Mary McClellan, daughter of John McClellan, Sr., married DAVID LOONEY. They moved from Virginia to Sullivan County, NORTH CAROLINA, about 1781. They had a son, Abraham Looney, and a daughter, JULIA ANNIS LOONEY, who married her cousin, Abraham McCLELLAN , son of William, son of John Sr., and Barbara Walker. The son, Abraham LOONEY, married Elizabeth Gammon and they resided in Maury County, Tenn. and had 12 children. note. This is my line. Abraham Looney and E.Gammon Looney were the parents of my ggg-grandmother, Mary Looney who married Mathew Rhea, in 1818, in Sullivan County, TENNESSEE.
That county was Virginia, North Carolina, State of Franklin and finally, Tennessee.
