Facts and Events
[edit] Advisory on John McCainThere is confusion over the birthdate and marriage of John McCain who married Agnes Kennedy. Several familysearch submissions seem to have confused him and his son John McCain, Jr. Additional research is needed on this family.
[edit] Information on John McCainFrom Rootsweb.com post: John McCain was one of the early settlers of the Waxhaws. On 5 Sept 1758, a survey was made for "John McKane" of 220 acres on the north side of Waxhaw Creek. Thomas Patton and William King carried the chains. Owners of adjoining land were Robert Caldwell, William King Senr, and Robert McClellan. The patent was issued 10 April 1761. This land, "by deed from John McCane", was sold to Repentance Townsend (deed not found) who sold 18 Jan 1766 to George McKemey (McCamey, McKemy, McKemie, and other spellings). This property is distinguished by the unproved assertion that Andrew Jackson, a relative of McKemey, was born somewhere on it. This land is now within Union Co, NC, just east of Lancaster Co, SC. 1770, January 9 (Mecklenburg Co, NC, 7, 265-266): John McKain of Mecklenburg Co, NC, to Andrew Crockett of Augusta Co, VA, for 90 pounds NC money, 140 acres on the west side of Six Mile Creek, adjoining James Potts, William Donolson, James Tate, Brice Millar. Witnessed by Archibald Crocket, John Rea, James Cochran. (Book 7, pp 265-266). (1772, Nov 2, Andrew sold this to his uncle Archibald.) On the same day, Archibald Crockett, Andrew Crockett, and Mary Crockett witnessed John McKain's sale of horses, cattle, and sheep to William King (Book 7, pp 266-267). (From this deed it is learned that he branded his cattle "MK" which tells us that he would have likely spelled his name as McK-- rather than McC-- at that time.) On 14 May 1771, Andrew Crockett, of Mecklenburg Co, NC, bought 225 acres on Twelve Mile Creek from Hugh Barnett; witnessed by Archibald Crockett, John Wilson, and John McKain (Book 5, pp 316-317).
Comments: Will exchange info on John McCain and his wife Agness (Nancy) Kennedy who married in Lancaster Co SC. John in Blount Co in 1798, leaving an estate to his wife and sons John, Eli, James, Robert and William. His son-in-law James H McGaughey and brother-in-l w John Kennedy were executors. James McGaughey signed for his wife Margaret's (Peggy) part even though she was not named in the will. Later widow Nancy moved her family with the McGaugheys to the Duck River where Eli married Mary (Polly) McGaughey. James arried Jane Edmonson. John married Elizabeth Johnston & Robert married her sister Catherine (Casey) Johnston. William married Margaret Byler in AL later. What happened to Nancy's brother John Kennedy and his family.
