John Marzolf, Sr., was born in Gottesheim, Alsace, France, on June 11, 1841. He grew to manhood in his native country and at the age of 21 entered the French army and served seven years as a soldier. During the war of 1870 between Germany and France he belonged to the French reserves but was never called into active service. On Dec. 26, 1870, he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Diemer. In 1871, they came to the United States and direct to Nauvoo, Illinois, where a number of relatives had settled previously. Mr. Marzolfe was one of Nauvoo’s substantial grape growers. To Mr. and Mrs. Marzolf were born eight children. One daughter died in infancy and one son, Emil, died at age 28. Mr. Marzolf was considered to be a highly respected and esteemed citizen. He was modest and unobstructive, honest, industrious, straightforward, conscientious and ever thoughtful of the feelings and interests of others. As a citizen he stood as an exemplar of the highest and best. In the home circle he was a good Christian and exemplified his professions in his daily life. Mr. Marzolf always was a staunch member of the Lutheran church. |
