I need help in determining the regiment and company of my ancestor, John Harrison Martin of northern Shelby County, just inside the St. Clair County line. He was born 19 June 1828 in Shelby Co and died 16 Jan 1916 in Shelby Co. The only record we have of him being in the war comes from a note written by a daughter stating that he was in the war and was wounded the 1st of May. At least 3 of his brothers served in the war: Capt. Daniel M. Martin, 18th Ala, Co. I; Thomas J. Martin, 18th Ala, Co. I, wounded at Shiloh; and Jasper N. Martin, 10th Ala, Co. D. Jasper was injured in the war and came home, only to die of his wounds on 5 October 1864. We do not know where/when he was wounded. If anyone has any information about John H. Martin, I would certainly appreciate it! Thank you in advance.

This man didn't serve in an Alabama unit. The 1907 Census shows that John H. Martin was born on June 19, 1828 near New London, Ala., Shelby County. He enlisted in Jan. 1862 at Hempstead TX in Co. "F", 8th Texas Infantry Regiment. His residence in 1907 was Vincent, Ala., but he appears in the census for St. Clair County.

His widow, Mary Catherine Martin, applied for a pension from Shelby County. They married in Shelby County on Feb. 1, 1870, and all their children are named. She said he suffered a flesh wound during the war which wasn't serious. He was promoted Corporal of his company on July 28, 1862. Captains of this company were Rufus Stinnett and James Jeffries. A statement by the widow mentioned that her husband was wounded on June 1st -- year and place not remembered.

As the years passed, Mary Catherine became less able to converse about the past. Her children regretted loss of a trunk that included many of John H. Martin's letters and personal papers. This occurred in a house fire about 1904.

His service record has been filed under Co. "F", 12th Texas Infantry, the official designation of this regiment. Please contact me at pittsaj14@hotmail.com if I can assist you further.

    Richard --

Some men moved west just before the war and returned afterwards. That appears to be the case here. Others returned after the war began to enlist in Alabama.

Sorry about your hair loss. Let me know if you'd like to have a copy of John H. Martin's service record and/or the pension application. The PA also includes a fair amount of information on the widow and the children.
