On Sunday, September 16th, 1840, John Littlefield of the Boston, Massachusetts area, was married to Mary J. Canfield of Connecticut by the Reverend Stillwell in New York City. John Littlefield was born on June 7, 1815. Mary J. Canfield was born on March 18, 1818. (I believe these birthdates are from cemetery records.) John Littlefield was a foot doctor and had an office in various parts of Manhattan; at one time on William Street, another time on Broadway near Canal Street. John and Mary lived on 129th Street.

Jean Quinn has papers that indicate Mary Canfield's middle name as Lee, and her birthdate was in 1825.

On Aug 29, 1850, Doctor Littlefield and his family were enumerated by the census, residing in Greenwich, Fairfield county, CT. Doctor Littlefield's occupation was cited as physician. Doct. Littlefield was listed as 40 years old (birth ca. 1810, 5 years earlier than cemetery records) and birthplace in NY. Mary Littlefield was 31 and also born in NY (making her younger than cemetery records). Their son, Leonard is cited as 5, born in NY. In the 1900 and 1910 census, when birthplace of one's parents was asked; Leonard/Walter's parents are listed with father born in MA and mother born in CT.

In 1860, John Littlefield was a chiropodist. The value of his real estate in New York City was estimated at $15,000, and his personal estate estimated at $2,000. In Trow's New York City Directory, 1862-63, John Littlefield was listed as a chiropodist, with office at 852 Broadway, and home at 105 E. 30th. He was also listed with a partner as Littlefield & Westervelt, chiropodists, 852 Broadway & 29 William.

Mary Canfield had a brother, George Canfield. George Canfield was Marine Editor for the New York Herald. He had three children: George Canfield, who worked for the Post Office in 1864; Amelia Canfield, possibly went insane; and Henry Canfield, who married a Swedish woman and went to Sweden to live. For the 1850 census, George W. Canfield, 35, was living in Hartford (Bristol county), CT with family: Mary, 32; George C., 7; Frederick A., 5; and Henry, 1; all born in CT. George's occupation was cited as clocks. The 1862/3 Trow's New York City Directory cited George Canfield as editor, 127 Fulton, home Lee av., n. Division av., Brooklyn. The 1870/71 New York City Directory cited two Henry Canfield's: Henry E, engraver, home 510 Broome; and Henry Y. sec., 411 Seventh av. Walter Graydon also had a cousin Mary Hipper, who married Benjamin Smith.

John Littlefield died June 9, 1864. John Littlefield's mother, Nancy G. Heresy (Generation 6), was still living when he died. He left her an annuity to help support her. He left his daughter, Frances, $1000, and his son, Leonard, $500 and a painting of him with his natural mother. The balance of his estate went to his second wife. John and Mary are buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York; White Oak Path. At the time of his death, Elizabeth and Fanny resided in Walkill, Orange County, NY, although he died in NYC. His second wife is buried elsewhere.
