He was an adult before 1138.

He was a contemporary of King Stephen and King Henry II. It is believed he was an Angevin loyalist (supporter of Henry II's mother Queen Mathilda against King Stephen) and rewarded as such.

The lands he held in Shropshire appear to have been granted in his lifetime whereas his Norfolk lands appear to come from both his parents.

He appears in many Fitz Alan charters, and may have been a relative.
