John "Franklin" Hunt was probably born in Bates County, Missouri where he is found on the 1850 U. S. Census[4]. On the 1860 Federal Census, he is living with his young wife, Mary E Hunt, in Mountain, McDonald, Missouri[3] and they are living next door to his Father-in-law, Samuel Watson and his wife's mother, Mary M Watson. His sister, Mary W Hunt Adcock's death certificate lists her mothers maiden name as Mary E Watson. Sometime between 1866 and April 1867, when Mary was born, the family moved to Iowa, possibly near other kin as Samuel and Mary Watson had previously lived in Iowa. The Watson's are listed on the 1856 Iowa State Census[5]. It is there that the other Hunt children (William and Allie) are born.
J Franklin Hunt served in the civil war as a private in Company F, 3 Reg't Missouri State Guards[2]. He was captured by the Union April 7, 1862 and was sent to the Alton, Illinois Military Prison. He took the Oath of Allegiance on 5 Sept 1862 and was then discharged[2].
On the 1870 Federal Census the family is living in Yell, Boone, Iowa[6] and by 1880, the family had moved to Fannin County, Texas[1]. J Franklin Hunt died in Fannin County, Texas on 10 Jan 1896. He is buried in Grove Hill Cemetery in Leonard, Texas along with his wife, Mary Elizabeth Watson Hunt and their daughter, Mary Hunt Adcock.
