John Hornet was born on 31st March 1827 and baptised the following month at Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire. He was the son of a straw plaiter named Mary Hornet, formerly Swallow, and her husband Joseph Hornet, an agricultural labourer. The family lived at Marshalls Heath, to the west of Wheathampstead village. Sadly John died when he was about 14 months old, being buried at Wheathampstead on 9th June 1828.
