Overview

From:Colonial Families?

John HOGE, Sr., born 1699 in Perth Amboy, New Jersey; died October 1754 in Cumberland County, Pa.; married Gwentholyn Bowen Davis 1722. John went with his father to the Three Lower counties and there married Gwenthleen Bowen (spelled Gwentholyn in some references) a native of Wales. He and his wife moved to East Pennsboro Twp., then Lancaster, now Cumberland Co., Pa. about 1730 and purchased land. Founded Hogetown and a church there in 1734. Only one of William's children to remain in Pa.. Referred to as Sr., Served as 2nd Lieutenent in Revoluntionary War. He and his wife are buried in Silver Springs Churchyard, Pa. Branch. All of the old stock of the Hoges and their connections, the Walkers, are buried in the graveyard at Silver Springs church, near where they lived.

Issues

Issue 1:

Some say that John died in Kernstown VA.
Others that he died in East Pennsboro, Cumberland County PA,
and still others that he diedin Washington County PA.
Is there direct evidence for where he died?

Response: From:Randall Hogue, May 2012

I think the confusion regarding Kernstown, VA is that John, being the eldest son of William was named in William's will and, from what I recall reading, was left as owner of at least some of the land on which William had lived.
John's son the Rev. John B. Hoge pastored at the Opequon Church in Kernstown for a while and it was the Rev John B. Hoge (grandson of William and Barbara) who is buried there.

Issue 2:

John is consistently described as dying 11 October 1745. What is the source for this? Gravesstone? Family bible? or what?

Response: From Deana Cross, September 2010

The Family of Hoge says John Hoge b. 1685 Perth Amboy, NJ died Oct 1752. The Hoge, Nichols and Related Families by William Nichols says he was born in 1688 Perth Amboy, NJ. This goes on to say that he purchased a large tract of land from William Penn, nine miles west of Harrisburg, now known as Hogestown. There he lived and probably died near the middle of October 1754, his will being probated on the 19th of the month. You might want to look for the will. If you believe the above, then he died in PA. This family is considered part of the PA branch of the Hoges.

I have never seen the name hyphenated. The Family of Hoge by James Hoge Tyler calls her a Welsh heiress and says she was born in Wales.

Page 21 - John Hoge, son of William, was born in Perth Amboy, N. J., in 1685. He married Gwentholyn Bowen Davis. She was born in Wales. He died October, 1752, in Cumberland County, Pa.
"Over two hundred and twenty years ago, and ninety-two years before the Declaration of Independence, when the country was a tangled wilderness and the thoroughfares were the bridle-paths of the Indians, he bought the land and laid out the town where the village of Hogetown, Pa., now stands, nine miles west of Harrisburg. There he lived and there he died."
Near this place is Silver Spring Church, a stone edifice erected in 1783, by the people for the Rev. Samuel Waugh, who married Elizabeth Hoge, granddaughter of this first Pennsylvania settler. The stone church replaced a log one. Mr. Waugh had the burying ground enclosed with a stone fence, still in good condition. In this graveyard are buried many of the Hoge Family, the odest stone being dated 1745. The one hundred and seventy-fifth anniversary of this church was held in 1909. The name of Hoge figures among the officers of this church till 1830. Apropos of this subject we give the following poem...
There are other verses, but this is sufficient to let the talent of the writer be known.
