- John died of paralysis. For a number of years, he was the immigrant agent of the B&O Railroad.
- "Dr. Hemmeter's Composition in Honor of His Father.—About two hundred of the United Singers of Baltimore, with an orchestra of thirty-five instruments, assembled May 29th [1899] at the grave of Mr. John Hemmeter, in Loudon Park Cemetery, Baltimore, and performed a new composition of Dr. John C. Hemmeter, son of the deceased, which was originally composed as the music to the Twenty-third Psalm."
