John Lambert Hammond was born in about 1854 in Belgium, the son of a lady's maid named Marie Thérèse Hammond, formerly Boutray, and her husband John Hammond, a butler. He appears in the 1861 census living at Felpham in Sussex, England, where his parents both worked in service at the home of a local clergyman. However, John and his younger brother George did not live in the big house where their parents worked. They were living elsewhere in the village with a couple called William and Ann Prior.

John has then not been traced for the next forty years. He reappears in the 1901 census living with his widowed mother at 53 Brunswick Road in Hove, which his parents had moved to before 1881 to run as a boarding house. John was described as a clerk and is recorded as being married, although his wife was not with them on census night. The family also had a cook named Bessie Kitchenham living with them. John's mother died in 1909, after which his sister Thérèse took over the running of the boarding house at 53 Brunswick Road. John appears there again in the 1911 census, described as assisting his sister in the business. Again, his wife is not there, suggesting possibly that they were estranged. Bessie Kitchenham was still working for them.

John and his sister Thérèse Hubertine Hammond later moved to 18 Park Road in Southborough Kent. John died on 21st September 1926. He left a will, with his estate being administered by his sister and Bessie Kitchenham.
